Moto2: Meet the Rookies. #6: Somkiat Chantra

Somkiat Chantra joins Dimas Ekky Pratama to complete the IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia line up.

The 20-year-old from Pattaya, Thailand, found his feet through competing in the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup from 2015 to 2016. His debut season in Asia Talent Cup saw Chantra injured half way through the calendar, and so was unable to complete the full 2015 season, despite this, Chantra presented promise in the first half as the Thai scored multiple podiums and a race win, resulting in 12thposition in the overall standings.

2016 demonstrated Chantra’s talent early on, as he took the win at the Chang Circuit for the second round, proving to be one of many throughout the year. Chantra was declared champion at the Sepang International Circuit, in which he competed against Can Oncü, Ai Ogura and Kazuki Masaki; all of which have graduated into the Moto3 championship.

2017 saw Chantra head to the FIM CEV Repsol Moto3 Championship, with the AP Honda Racing Team, as the Thai became accustomed to new circuits and new rivals. His first season landed him in a comfortable 20thin the overall standings, picking up points in Le Mans and Jerez, as well as the season finale in Valencia.

With a year’s experience under his belt, Chantra returned to the CEV in 2018 and achieved multiple top 10 results, with his best being 4thin France. Last year, Chantra also competed in the Moto3 Thai event as AP Honda Racing Thailand’s wildcard, successfully securing 9thahead of Czech Jakub Kornfeil, after qualifying in 24th, finishing just 1.643 seconds behind Di Giannantonio in first.

Chantra’s continuous improvement and expansion of his racing experiences over the last few years proves that he will be one to watch as the Thai now heads to the 600cc class, continuing on a Honda. How will he fare this coming season?
