British rider claims his 48th pole position in Superbike class to beat team mate Jonathan Rea and Pata Yamaha rider Alex Lowes.
Tom Sykes claimed his 7th pole of the season nine years after claiming his first pole position on green machine, smashing the existing pole record with lap time of 1:56.124 in what will be Huddersfield based rider last two races with Kawasaki bikes this weekend. Reigning champion Jonathan Rea finished in second position in KRT locked out first two places on the grid, while Pata Yamaha’s Alex Lowes, who was leading after first run in Q2, completed the front row in third position.
Milwaukee Aprilia rider Eugene Laverty continued his strong weekend in his final weekend with British squad by finishing the qualifying in fourth position, beating his Aprilia team mate Lorenzo Savadori and Barni Ducati’s Xavi Fores, who progressed from Q1, to complete the second row. BMW rider Loris Baz starts last two races of the season from the head of third row in seventh, narrowly beating second Pata Yamaha rider Michael van der Mark and leading Aruba Ducati rider Marco Melandri, who finished in ninth position in what was very complicated qualifying session for the team. Red Bull Honda’s Leon Camier, who like Fores advanced from Q1, Puccetti Kawasaki rider Toprak Razgatlioglu and second Aruba Ducati rider Chaz Davies completed the top 12 riders on the grid.
Best of the rest behind them was Orelac’s Leandro Mercado, who finished qualifying in 13th position to head fifth row on the grid, beating second Honda rider Jake Gagne and Pedercini’s Gabriele Ruiu to the spot. Starting grid, which will only consist of 17 riders, as Guandalini Yamaha’s Jakub Smrz withdrew through injury, was completed by GoEleven Kawasaki rider Roman Ramos and MV Agusta’s Maximilian Scheib.
Race 1 starts from 19:00 local time (17:00 uk time).
